It's not so easy
to create a new poem
every single day
on command

It's tough to open up my heart
and craft an interesting poem
that will be thought provoking
on a universal level

You told me to write two poems
in a race against the clock
like it's something simple
that happens without effort

Sometimes poems write themselves
other times I have to rip them out
from deep within my soul
but tonight this is all I've got

Evolving in darkness
For centuries unseen
Living unknown

Ancient medicine men
Communicated beyond reality
Traveling through the void

In the morning
I hustle to get dressed
Then I take the train
Into the city for work
And I daydream about
A time when I'll be free
To focus all my energy
On writing great poetry

Flowers raining down

A long walk in the fresh air

Strange ancient vibrations
Swirling deep in outer space
Standing in the moving universe
Sacred celebration ceremony

Crazy adventures running around
Soul circus in an alternate reality
Floating through tall trees growing
Hop in a cab and head home

is sleeping

turning on the tv
in the darkness
with headphones
plugged in

secretly watching
black and white
monster movies
on the late late show

everyday life

Swinging on monkey bars
Running through sprinklers

Cold wet drink
At the water fountain
On a hot summer day

Ice cream man
Selling sweet treats
On the city streets

Pigeons eat birdseed
In little mobs
Around the park benches

Laughter good cheer
There's a happy energy here
We are all children

The fog rolls in
as daylight fades
and the wind blows
while wolves howl

Vampire moon
a deep blood red
darkness creeps
in thick shadows

Hideous creatures
locked in the castle
hungry for flesh
ready to rampage

Wailing away

Electric night
Energized light
Flashing bright

Cruising free
Warm breeze
Hot speed

Paradise found

Fly in the face of freedom
Wield the hammer of power
Strike with scientific precision
Attack when they least expect it

Don't ever stop fighting
Never give up or give in

Retire at a young age
Collect a pension for the rest of your life

Getting sick on a Monday
is the worst time to get sick
because you feel lousy all week
coughing sneezing choking wheezing
until the cherry cold medicine kicks in
taking a moment of quiet calm
buzzing numb to the touch
where the air tastes so sweet
and you can finally drift off
into a peaceful sleep

riding the train

The voice inside your heart
is leading the way

to make magic happen

I look out across this great metropolis

and I see millions of parts moving

simultaneously working in unison

towards some great goal or dream

Skyline surrounding us completely

we are swallowed up inside it's belly

turning three hundred and sixty degrees

on the rise in the middle of a downfall

The buildings sparkle and tower above

lonely skyscrapers standing silently

taller than all of them combined 

in the shadows of human achievement

There's never enough
But that's the thing
You will always need

I wish I had more time
But I can't find the time
And you wouldn't
Give me the time

We'll look ahead to another time
Maybe that time will be more manageable
Maybe that time won't be in such short supply

The bars of a cold steel gate
Where nature meets man
Listening to the hush

Hearing strange footsteps on the stairs
Home alone when the room gets cold

Spiritual connections to another place
Forbidden memories from another lifetime
Simple needs for compassion are forgotten
Listen to the voice inside your heart

Begging for change on Madison Avenue
Walking downtown with madness in mind
Chasing the late train on the way home
Finding religion at the thirteenth hour

The clock keeps ticking as time goes on
We'll be judged by words we leave behind
Weaving wishes between burning desires
Sending live love and joy into the universe

as we stood in their footsteps

The grand hall was full of ghosts
hearing echoes of old sounds singing
we've touched sources of eternal energy

Blending in with the crowd knocked out
watching Jimi Hendrix play Machine Gun
at the Fillmore East on New Years Eve

The spirit of technical electric mayhem
transcending to a higher level of existence
expanding deep into the temple of infinity

Racing back home at the break of dawn
the golden sun rises over Second Avenue
eternally through the musical landscape

When we used to bathe in champagne
And the personalities at the parties
Were hotter than the summer heat

Poisoned in a cloud of black smoke
Down in flames after the last call
