05-31-14 Missed Step

It's not so easy
to create a new poem
every single day
on command

It's tough to open up my heart
and craft an interesting poem
that will be thought provoking
on a universal level

You told me to write two poems
in a race against the clock
like it's something simple
that happens without effort

Sometimes poems write themselves
other times I have to rip them out
from deep within my soul
but tonight this is all I've got

05-30-14 Subterranean Artifacts

Beneath the surface
Are underground dwellers
In mysterious caverns
Waiting to emerge

Hidden civilization
Evolving in darkness
For centuries unseen
Living unknown

Ancient medicine men
Communicated beyond reality
Traveling through the void
In secrets revealed below

05-29-14 Wishing In The Well

In the morning
I hustle to get dressed
Then I take the train
Into the city for work
And I daydream about
A time when I'll be free
To focus all my energy
On writing great poetry

05-28-14 Letting Loose In Central Park

Enjoying the breeze
Flowers raining down
Grooving at the summer stage
A long walk in the fresh air

Strange ancient vibrations
Swirling deep in outer space
Standing in the moving universe
Sacred celebration ceremony

Crazy adventures running around
Soul circus in an alternate reality
Floating through tall trees growing
Hop in a cab and head home

05-27-14 Late Movie Creature Feature

sneaking around
after midnight
when everyone
is sleeping

turning on the tv
in the darkness
with headphones
plugged in

secretly watching
black and white
monster movies
on the late late show

escape from
the horrors of
everyday life
in the big city

05-26-14 Sketches Of The Evening News

Gas station robberies in New Jersey
Flags on display around the country
We honor our fallen heroes today
On the official start of the summer

Hikers missing after a massive mudslide
Pope leaves holy land with a call for peace
Thunderstorms ahead in the weekly forecast
Swarm of bees removed from uptown tree

Yankees beat Red Sox in extra inning thriller
Poetry stimulates brain development in kids
Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend
We'll be right back after this commercial break

05-25-14 Fooling Around At The Playground

Down the slide
Up the stairs
In the tunnel

Sandbox sunshine
Swinging on monkey bars
Running through sprinklers

Cold wet drink
At the water fountain
On a hot summer day

Ice cream man
Selling sweet treats
On the city streets

Pigeons eat birdseed
In little mobs
Around the park benches

Laughter good cheer
There's a happy energy here
We are all children

05-24-14 The Monsters Have Escaped

The fog rolls in
as daylight fades
and the wind blows
while wolves howl

Vampire moon
a deep blood red
darkness creeps
in thick shadows

Hideous creatures
locked in the castle
hungry for flesh
ready to rampage

05-23-14 Forest Hills Flashpoint

Friday fantasy
Summer sirens
Wailing away

Electric night
Energized light
Flashing bright

Cruising free
Warm breeze
Hot speed

Paradise found
Riding down
Queens Boulevard

05-22-14 Strategy For Victory

Fly in the face of freedom
Wield the hammer of power
Strike with scientific precision
Attack when they least expect it

Don't ever stop fighting
Never give up or give in

Retire at a young age
Collect a pension for the rest of your life

05-21-14 Hooked On The Devil's Syrup

Getting sick on a Monday
is the worst time to get sick
because you feel lousy all week
coughing sneezing choking wheezing
until the cherry cold medicine kicks in
taking a moment of quiet calm
buzzing numb to the touch
where the air tastes so sweet
and you can finally drift off
into a peaceful sleep

05-20-14 Swinging For The Fences

Intentionally walking
around town

Late nights spent quietly
riding the train

The voice inside your heart
is leading the way

Then put the ball in play
to make magic happen

05-19-14 Humble Under The Skyline

I look out across this great metropolis
and I see millions of parts moving
simultaneously working in unison
towards some great goal or dream

Skyline surrounding us completely
we are swallowed up inside it's belly
turning three hundred and sixty degrees
on the rise in the middle of a downfall

The buildings sparkle and tower above
lonely skyscrapers standing silently
taller than all of them combined
in the shadows of human achievement

05-18-14 Prime Time

Can't buy more time
There's never enough
But that's the thing
You will always need

I wish I had more time
But I can't find the time
And you wouldn't
Give me the time

We'll look ahead to another time
Maybe that time will be more manageable
Maybe that time won't be in such short supply
Better luck next time

05-17-14 Gentleman Pirates

Out on the high seas
Slowly baking in the sun
Plundering priceless treasures
Gold doubloons in a wooden chest

Cannonball swashbuckle
Peg leg parrot eye patch style

Walk the plank me hartees
Aaaaaarrgh matee
Yo ho ho yo ho ho
And a bottle of rum

05-16-14 Through An Open Window

Sheets of rainwater
Cascading down
Through the trees
Like instant waterfalls

The smell of springtime
Drifting through the air
Fresh flowers blooming
Green green grass growing

Birds chirping in the morning
First rays of daylight shine
Peeking through white clouds
Deep blue skies waiting to shine

Wild roses twisting around
The bars of a cold steel gate
Where nature meets man
Listening to the hush

05-15-14 Thank You For Riding With Me

Late night
drunk

Back seat of
a yellow taxi cab

There is no tomorrow
We are timeless

05-14-14 Lucky Rocket Number Five Fourteen

Converted by the kids on the street
Sacrificed at the church in the old hotel
Hearing strange footsteps on the stairs
Home alone when the room gets cold

Spiritual connections to another place
Forbidden memories from another lifetime
Simple needs for compassion are forgotten
Listen to the voice inside your heart

Begging for change on Madison Avenue
Walking downtown with madness in mind
Chasing the late train on the way home
Finding religion at the thirteenth hour

The clock keeps ticking as time goes on
We'll be judged by words we leave behind
Weaving wishes between burning desires
Sending live love and joy into the universe

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

05-13-14 Subway Superstar

riding an early train
reading the newspaper
thinking about the day
sipping a hot cup of coffee
breakdancing at the station
cold air is our worst enemy
spinning onto the platform
waiting for my train to come

05-12-14 Launch Codes For Doomsday

The struggle to survive
Walks hand in hand
With chaos and pain

Go back to the barn
Chasing owls out west
Far into nowhere fast

The streets are all bombed out
And the kids are crazy wasted
Before the new dawn breaks

The pyramid language revealed
Entombed in hidden darkness
Peaceful existence in the universe

Fear of extinction washes over us
Crushed under the weight of war
In the heart of a doomed civilization

Plan to escape in a rocket
When the structure crumbles
We will all go into hiding

05-11-14 Wake Up Ritual

Bright sun explodes
On a cold morning
Newspaper headlines
Radio traffic report
Crispy burnt toast
Anticipation

The day ahead
An unwritten story
But it's really all about
That early cop of coffee
Hot thick sweet rich
Start your engines

05-10-14 A Day At The Zoo With My Son

We spent it together
Father and son fun
At the zoo this afternoon

We took the train
All the way to the park
Then walked the wrong way

We saw the big bears
You liked watching the seals
But you were scared of the goats

We ran snuck into a barn
When the sunshine turned to rain
Waiting for the storm to pass

We laughed with llamas
You fell asleep on the way home
Next time we'll ride the carousel

05-09-14 Speedy Delivery

Service on the fly

Looks good on paper

The new fashion

Spotlights shining

Morning noon and night

Out against the elements

Heat wave thunderstorms

Cold winter blizzards

Cruising uptown fast

Back downtown

Then uptown again

Not giving in

Never giving up

05-07-14 Still Life Alive

The beauty of a bowl of cherries
sitting pretty on a kitchen table
on a warm summer morning
with the windows open wide
and sunshine singing out

05-06-14 Traveling Back In Time To See Hendrix

We waited until after sunset
when the shadows grew large
and the moonlight was dim

The giant brick walls stood tall
on sacred ground where gods walked
as we stood in their footsteps

Snuck in through a secret tunnel
into a time warp spinning backwards
wandering into historical situations

The grand hall was full of ghosts
hearing echoes of old sounds singing
we've touched sources of eternal energy

Blending in with the crowd knocked out
watching Jimi Hendrix play Machine Gun
at the Fillmore East on New Years Eve

The spirit of technical electric mayhem
transcending to a higher level of existence
expanding deep into the temple of infinity

Racing back home at the break of dawn
the golden sun rises over Second Avenue
eternally through the musical landscape

05-05-14 You And Your Plus One

Those lights sure were bright
When we used to bathe in champagne
And the personalities at the parties
Were hotter than the summer heat

Exclusive access after hours
Downstairs in the basement until dawn
Blinded by the morning sunshine sky
Evil spirits hunting behind the scenes

The darkness of daytime hours
Poisoned in a cloud of black smoke
Down in flames after the last call
Forgotten forever at the end of the jam

05-04-14 For Immediate Release

The winds of time
Blow away so fast
Changing
Aging

Walls are built
Buildings crumble
Walls are rebuilt

Growing tall
Monster trees
Standing string
Through changing seasons

The rains pour down hard
This shelter was built
To keep all the water out
Until it's safe to go

05-03-14 To Be A Young Child Again

I have a wish
That someday
Life will be like
That episode of
The Twilight Zone
Called Kick The Can
And we'll all get a chance
To be young kids again
So we can play ball
In the school yard
All day long

05-02-14 Return Of The Ancient Creators

get the
message across

the universe is meen
they chopped down
all the trees

intelligent design
rewind the time

they came back
to claim their prize

gold miners
living underground
without coffee

special gifts
manufactured civilization
lucky to be alive

05-01-14 Lost Inside A Ghost Universe

We traveled across the stars
all the way from elsewhere
to never there and back again

Black holes swallowing space
formless shadows fade away
through glass doors of discovery

Rocket Number Nine is out there
their last transmission was received
before they crossed into the next realm

Giant floating organisms eating planets
reverse transition between light years
passing through the astral time shift

Recording secret messages in outer space
bouncing around over stars and moons
we have entered into an alternate reality
