across from Madison Square Park

where the pigeons are all feeding

on stale breadcrumbs scattered around

from the shaky hand of an elderly woman 

wearing a red scarf and a dirty raincoat

and she's been there for decades

The ageless beauty

may seem strange at first
but when you look to see
the wrinkles on their skin
it becomes quite clear
that they've lived life hard
and been through the wars

But in this age and day
you can smooth those wrinkles away
with an injection or surgery
and underneath the cosmetic mask
they are old and frightened
because the new generation
is rising up against the old regime
which will soon become extinct

I've seen buildings rise
and I watched the Twin Towers fall
but I'll always be humbled
while walking in the shadow
of the Empire State Building
shooting up as high as the moon
dominating the blue skies above
protecting our city every single day
perfectly placed in the center of the skyline
standing tall over all the other skyscrapers

revolving behind a dark curtain

Missing pieces of the puzzle
hidden from view for many centuries
history manipulated by puppeteers
pulling strings inside the shadows

Those champions were never even alive
swollen stories never even happened
sacred places have never even been located
those powerful artifacts never even existed

Ancient legends recorded in the sands of time

so full of ambition and inspiration

I remember you as a hot designer
setting the media world on fire
with your bold new fresh ideas
and an eye for perfect composition
in your office on Thirty Fourth Street

Now I see you as a beautiful mother
taking care of our newborn baby
sitting in your little nest of blankets
nursing our infant in the middle of the night
and rocking him to a peaceful sleep

I've watched you create so many
stunning works of visual art
as the years have passed us by
but now it's clear for me to see
that our child is your greatest masterpiece

internal rage
lead to external
consequences
when it all
went down
so very unfairly
since the game
was rigged from
the beginning

they worked the mark
in a set up sting
but when it came
time for the big
payoff punch
the bag was empty
and the keys
were nowhere
to be found

so it's completely clear
that the play went down
according to plan
and the screw job
was executed exactly
as it was supposed to

that same old scam
left many victims
poor and in pain
and added
injury to insult
as the crimes
continued to
play out

but when the
cash grab was
counted up and
those old debts
were settled
it became obvious
that we all got cheated

was so clear and crystal clean

to a deathly cloud of black smoke

And we were all left to wonder why

Passed along to the next generation
Saved from the fate of a doomed civilization

Sugarland fairies flying around
slip sliding away on a sunburst rainbow
singing songs in the moonbeam spotlight

Out on the porch
of our old wooden cabin
way back in the deep woods
a creature came to visit

The air was so thick
and it's smell was so bad
and it's hair was so shaggy
and it's foot was so big

It grumbled a low growl
then it let out a monstrous howl
before disappearing into the night
but it felt like we were being watched

When grandma went back to the kitchen
she noticed that the fresh apple pie she baked
had been stolen right off the windowsill
where it was simmering to cool down

Right outside the kitchen window
there was a pile of pie crumbs and apples
and a long trail of enormous footprints
which led out into the enchanted forest
