03-30-12 Insult To Injury

A cold walk home
after a long day at work
trading away time and energy
for a slim paycheck

The rain begins to fall
there is not a star in the sky
wind blows right through
many layers of thick clothing

Stepping over frozen piles of snow
then slipping on the slickery ice
slamming down hard against pavement
bones rattle and shatter with a loud crack

Staring up into the thick black night
laid out flat in the middle of the dirty street
wet shivering chills shaking and quaking in agony
feeling so small and insignificant in the universe
